Reclamation of a frame works best if you have a piece in mind and then go looking for a frame that will fit. What the client want to display was a commemorative group of stamp sheets
and they needed a big frame so this one worked well. They have very little monetary value so their priority was simply to have the grouping look good. Each sheet was a slightly different size and they varied in terms of their orientations so we had to play a bit to find the best arrangement. It turned out that the most balanced design was vertical and that’s what we went with. Metal frames can have some issues with being reused, mostly with the hardware. While Neilson has dominated the metal frame industry for years, there have been a few other manufactures and each one tends to need slightly different hardware. Depending on the hardware, you can have trouble switching the hanging orientation of these types of frames since replacements may not be available. The sheets were floated (meaning they are sitting on top of the mat, showing their edges, rather than under it with a opening for each one) on a white archival mat. The soft colours keep it looking clean and not too busy. They now have a totally new piece that can be used in a very different space for the cost of the mat board!
